Davidson Community Garden Off to Great Start!

As of Monday 4/23 DCG will have delivered 135 lbs of food to Ada Jenkins getting off to a great start towards the annual goal of 1 ton of food donated to the food pantry.  Here's a sample of one recent delivery of swiss chard, spinach, and lettuce.  Other produce delivered to date include several 5-gallon buckets of beats and turnips,  carrots, and even a couple heads of cabbage - all of which overwintered.


The garden has already brought out many volunteers this season which is great to see.  This past week saw a crew of high-schoolers from Community School of Davidson who put in a great effort Friday morning.  They weeded, spread mulch, planted, and even built some steps into the hillsides on both sides of the tracks which will make watering from the DUMC chapel much safer.

This Saturday, saw the major planting day of the season so far.   After the morning's effort the garden is all but planted for the summer growing season.  Items in the ground include assorted types of peas, squash, zucchini, assorted tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lettuce, spinach, green and rainbow swiss chard, pole beans, bush beans, cabbage, broccoli, cucumbers, assorted peppers, cantaloupes, and okra.  Plantings of strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are coming on strong this year.  The garden even has a fig tree and two apple trees that will hopefully produce in a few years as well.
